What “Installation” Actually Means
Three different services share the words “water heater.” Here’s the map:
- Repair fixes a fault in an existing heater — a failed element, a bad thermostat, a leaking connection. The heater stays; the problem goes. See water heater repair.
- Replacement swaps a dead or dying heater for a new one in the same role — same spot (usually), same job, new unit. See water heater replacement.
- Installation — this page — designs a new setup: hot water where there wasn’t any, a heater moved to a new location, a system reconfigured during renovation, or a deliberate change of heater type for a new demand.
The distinction matters because the work is different. Replacement inherits the old setup’s decisions; installation makes new ones — location, fuel, venting, drainage, sizing for a changed demand. Getting those decisions right at the start is the whole job.
